You are not allowed to work outside campus unless on an EAD. if on an EAD can sign W9.

CIS does read cover letters, but that's not the issue here. Will be straightened out during the interview.

That is correct. SSA will not agree to issue a SSN without one showing an EAD.

Yes, your employer or the business entity that is employing you on "I" visa could apply for/operate under a fictitious name.
