I've been representing criminal defendants on appeal and post-conviction proceedings for many years in the state and federal courts. I often work on the most serious cases and last year was cocounsel on a landmark US Supreme Court case--Riley v California where the court unanimously found police may not search an arrestee's cell phone without a warrant. I've recently had murder and child molest convictions, and a death sentence reversed. In 2015 I was presented with appellate lawyer of the year awards from the San Diego Criminal Defense Bar Association and Appellate Defenders Inc.
I write regular articles for California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and I give lectures for that organization and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. I'm also active in California Appellate Defense Counsel.
For the last 32 years I have also written and edited the California Criminal Law Reporter--which is a case law digest summarizing every published criminal law opinion written by the California courts and the US Supreme Court. The service has long served as a primary resource for criminal lawyers and judges all over California.

A Gifted Appellate Attorney

He is empathic and caring; yet he is no bleeding heart. His personal qualities of kindness and compassion are balanced...
