Filed unauthorized, harmful petition against my interests

I retained Bona Law and attorney Aaron Gott for a high-stakes Minnesota Supreme Court proceeding involving review of a licensing decision. The first draft was not sent to me until the day before the filing deadline, with counsel stating that they were “still working on this.” I worked overnight until... approximately 6:30 a.m. on the filing-deadline day revising that draft into a cognizable appellate petition and removing damaging and stigmatizing language from Mr. Gott’s draft. Mr. Gott nevertheless filed an unauthorized petition in my name without my final approval. The petition he filed still contained the language I had removed and operated against my interests by justifying the licensing board’s denial rather than advocating for my position. When I objected that the petition did not challenge legal error as he had been retained to do, Mr. Gott defended it as a “powerful redemption story.” He also filed confidential licensing-board materials and personal records concerning me in a manner that made hundreds of pages publicly accessible, and failed to effect required service on the proper recipient. The quality of Mr. Gott’s appellate drafting was also deplorable: the petition did not meaningfully challenge legal error as he had been retained to do, and I had to redraft the entire petition myself. I also had to prepare corrective motion practice so the Minnesota Supreme Court would remove the harmful petition he filed and accept my corrected petition as the operative petition. I cannot recommend Bona Law or Aaron Gott.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
