I found Katya through Yelp, when I realized I’d need to declare bankruptcy after the pandemic, since I owed too much money to my landlord, even after fundraising and receiving grants from 2020-2024. I was terrified and crestfallen. I had worked so VERY hard to save my apartment home and was suddenly about to lose it all over again. Katya helped me put together the paperwork to declare bankruptcy and assisted me at EVERY TURN with my documents, when I had no idea what I was doing and so, so scared. She communicated well, consistently, via text and email, and never left me hanging. Ever. Ever! She also helped me write a few letters to my landlord to ask for ways to stay living in my home, because if I declared bankruptcy, he wouldn’t get the money I owed him, and I would also be evicted. In the end, because of Katya’s help, I didn’t have to declare bankruptcy AND I STAYED LIVING IN MY HOME through a payment plan we all navigated together, even though the end of the pandemic meant I needed to have paid all of my back rent already, which I had not. Through the miracle of Katya’s professionalism, she and I prevailed, and she proved that she was nothing short of a lawyerly guardian angel and big sister I never had. I always felt protected, heard, seen, and supported by Katya. I felt like her equal, never her subordinate, working with her on the same team to keep me in my home.
