You can try, but even if you aren't arrested, they are unlikely to issue the id.

Wait to see if they file a criminal complaint. If so, hire a lawyer. Petty theft convictions can stop you from getting car loans and home loans.

Expungement will allow you not say you haven't been convicted on most employment applications, but expungement does not mean erased.
