This client was charged with 65 counts of fraud with enhancements for the extremely high dollar amounts involved, many of the victims being seniors, prior convictions for the same type of fraud and he had been to prison for them. There were bankruptcies involved by the defendant as well as numerous civil cases. The case was filed as a major fraud case with a special prosecutor. There was a proposed resolution offered to the defendant that was rejected by him. He felt the offer should have been much less and wanted to continue the case to get a better offer although the prosecutor would not offer one acceptable to the defendant. HIs bail was extremely high because of the amount of damages to numerous people, age of the victims and his prior offenses were the same type of fraud. The discovery was voluminous. The prosecution ultimately added numerous additional charges in a new case. The defendant did not want to pay for the new case and asked the court to relieve me on his present case. My fees were earned based on the complexity oi the matter and the time spent on the case.
