Run for the Hills

My experience with the Law Office of Sylvia Venita Gonzalez was deeply disappointing and extremely stressful from start to finish. At the beginning of my case, I primarily dealt with her receptionist—now her associate—Erika, who was consistently rude, dismissive, and unprofessional. Communication ...became so difficult that Sylvia even considered dropping my case after I expressed frustration with Erika’s behavior—until she discovered that my insurance policy was worth one million dollars. The coordination of my medical treatment was poorly managed. The first doctor they referred me to was only open one day a week, which was unworkable. When I raised this issue, they referred me to another provider over 11 miles away, creating unnecessary delays and a gap in treatment. Later, Sylvia began working with an attorney named Matthew, who was professional, supportive, and made me feel confident during my deposition. He even indicated that my case had six-figure potential—but he abruptly left the firm shortly after. As my case progressed, I was referred to a back specialist who recommended invasive surgery. I initially agreed but later canceled due to cost. Not long after, Sylvia told me opposing counsel had become unresponsive and that we’d return to negotiating with the adjuster. Around that time, her attitude shifted dramatically—she started discouraging me from trial and making me doubt my chances. Sylvia told me, “Torrance Court does not have any compassion for the injured.” I disagreed, explaining that I was still suffering and ready to testify, but instead of supporting me, she continued using manipulative tactics to pressure me into settling. She even sent me a “trial risk” letter highlighting my past criminal history from over 15 years ago, implying a jury would judge me harshly. The tone of that letter made me feel like a defendant rather than a plaintiff. Under her pressure, I reluctantly accepted a settlement I wasn’t comfortable with. She gave me only two days to decide, claiming her fee percentage would increase afterward. Less than a month later—after I had already settled—Sylvia told my wife (whose related case was still open) that the adjuster wanted to reopen negotiations. Had I not been pressured, I firmly believe I would have recovered far more compensation. The amount I received doesn’t begin to cover my ongoing medical needs or the lasting impact the accident has had on my life and earning capacity. There were also serious procedural and ethical concerns. The firm once sent me a transcript containing another client’s confidential information—a clear violation of attorney-client privilege. When I pointed out mistakes or inconsistencies, they were dismissed or denied in a gaslighting manner. What troubled me most was Sylvia’s eagerness for me to accept a low offer when opposing counsel stopped communicating. Rather than preparing for trial, she seemed focused on convincing me to settle quickly, emphasizing my weaknesses instead of my strengths. Her behavior made me question whether she was truly advocating for me. After settling, Sylvia refused to properly negotiate my medical liens, insisting that certain providers be paid in full because she felt their charges were “fair.” I had to follow up myself to ensure fair reductions were made. In my professional opinion—(as Sylvia would say) having worked in the personal injury field for nearly nine years—Sylvia appeared unprepared and unwilling to take my case to trial. Instead of advocating for me, she minimized my injuries, discredited my character, and rushed me into a low settlement. Her communication style caused significant emotional distress for me and my family. Every interaction left me feeling anxious, defeated, and deeply regretful for hiring her as my attorney.
