No. You have to stop working until you open a new EAD.

As long as you maintain your H-1B status, you can change employers at any time. Just have your new employer file an H-1B petition on your behalf...

It's up to you whether to hire an attorney, but yes, you can file a fee waiver and an I-485 with the Immigration Judge.
