Back in November 2012, I experienced one of the most horrifying nights of my life. I was pulled over by a L.A. County Sheriff’s deputy for making an illegal U-turn. It was 1:00 a.m. on a weekend, so naturally I was given Field Sobriety Tests and asked to blow into a breathalyzer. Although I only had ...a few drinks and didn't “feel” drunk, my B.A.C. was well above .08, the legal limit for driving. Within 20 minutes, my life was turned completely upside down and would be forever changed. I was arrested and taken to jail! I had NEVER expected to find myself in such an unfortunate situation. Being a law abiding, professional person and suddenly arrested for DUI is a nightmare and very stressful. The possibility of having a life defining criminal record brought me much anxiety and worry. I was beyond devastated, absolutely crushed and literally thought my life was over. Being labeled as a criminal and reminded of it when applying for work or trying to enter Canada, to visit the person I love, destroyed my self-esteem and identity. I was willing to take responsibility for my actions; however, I simply I had too much at stake to plead guilty to a DUI. Further, I didn't believe my life should be ruined as a result of, though inexcusable, an ignorant and honest eye-opening mistake. Pleading guilty to a DUI was going to damage my life and prevent me from being a productive member in society. Mr. Dudley was very patient with me as I explained the devastating and damaging consequences a DUI conviction would have on my life. I have 2 current main life defining goals; to excel and grow in my career, in public administration, and to develop a strong partnership and family with my boyfriend who is a Canadian citizen. Unfortunately, I was in extreme danger of losing these things if I were to receive a DUI conviction. Firstly, I was in danger of losing my current government job and would likely be inadequate at obtaining employment in my field of public service; and secondly, I would become inadmissible into Canada and unable to visit my boyfriend and his family. My B.A.C. was 0.13 and it was pretty cut and dry. A DUI conviction and suspension of my Drivers License seemed pretty much inevitable. I felt hopeless. He prevented the suspension of my driver’s license, got both DUI charges against me dismissed and the charges were reduced to a “Wet” Reckless. I honestly don’t know how I would've survived without him. Bottom line is, don't depend on the a public defender, don't just hire any attorney, hire an expert to give you the same passion and perseverance that someone like Attorney Robert Dudley is going to give to you.
