Making a 1099 "employee" attend mandatory meetings is strong evidence of misclassification. You may want to speak to a lawyer.
Suing them is about the only way to get a decent lawyer involved, i.e., the advice you want.
It sounds like misclassification to me. There are a host of factors you've probably found and reviewed online.
All I can think of is if these employees were in some way whistleblowers, i.e. refused to do something illegal, reported it, etc.
