Biography: Member, University of Southern California Law Review, 1975-1977. Law Clerk to U.S. District Judge Howard B. Turrentine, Southern District of California, 1977-1978. Judge Pro Tem, Los Angeles County Small Claims Court. Civil and Attorney Fees Arbitrator, Los Angeles County Bar Association.
William Dickerman was transplanted from New York to Los Angeles at a young age. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a B.A. in History in 1973. He delayed his law school attendance for a year while he got valuable work experience as a flight steward for Pan American World Airways (“Pan Am”), volunteered on the staff of a U.S. congressman, and travelled in Asia.
Mr. Dickerman then attended the University of Southern California Law Center, serving on the prestigious Law Review and as student Director and Prosecutor in the university-wide judicial system. Upon graduating with a J.D. degree in 1977, Mr. Dickerman accepted the coveted position of Judicial Law Clerk to U.S. District Judge Howard B. Turrentine. After that one-year appointment, Mr. Dickerman travelled extensively, then began his practice of law in earnest.
His first job was as an associate at the boutique firm Leopold, Petrich & Smith, where he got solid grounding in litigation involving literary properties, television, and movies. He then worked at Gelfand & Hinojosa, where he obtained trial and general litigation experience in a broad array of business, commercial, real estate, and other disputes. Mr. Dickerman’s final move, before opening his own firm, was to Antin, Magasinn, Stern, Litz & Grebow, where he broadened his civil litigation experience.
In 1990, Mr. Dickerman formed Dickerman & Associates in order to deliver exceptional services at a reasonable cost, and to exceed clients’ expectations regarding personal integrity, trust, and communications. If the number of long-term clients, client referrals, and testimonials he has received is any indication, the firm has been meeting its goals.
Public service has always been one of Mr. Dickerman’s key concerns. He has served the community as a Small Claims Court judge; an arbitrator in civil and attorney fees disputes; a court mediator in landlord/tenant cases; a lecturer in Continuing Legal Education; a board member of the State Bar’s California Young Lawyers Association; a member of a State Bar executive committee; and a Moot Court judge for law schools.
Mr. Dickerman lives with his wife and children in Los Angeles. His interests include reading history and biography; hiking and camping; many outdoor sports; and classical and bluegrass music.
