While in law school, Joe was a law clerk for both the Civil Division and Criminal Division of the United States Attorney's Office in San Diego. Joe worked as a Certified Legal Intern at the Major Narcotics Unit of the San Diego District Attorney's Office. After graduation from law school, Joe was a law clerk in the Ventura County District Attorney's Office until he became a Ventura County Deputy District Attorney in 1996.
DEPUTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYLos Angeles County for 12 years
In November of 1997, Joe became a Deputy District Attorney for the County of Los Angeles. Joe served as a prosecutor in the Long Beach, Norwalk, San Fernando, Van Nuys, Santa Monica (now Airport), Bellflower, Downey, Whittier, Huntington Park, East Los Angeles, El Monte, Alhambra, Santa Clarita, and Eastlake courthouses.
66 FELONY JURY TRIALS14 Murders & Attempted Murders
During his twelve years as a prosecutor, Joe tried sixty-six felony jury trials including seven homicides, seven attempted murders, and multiple robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, child molestation, sexual assault, domestic violence, witness intimidation, gang enhancement, firearms enhancement, three strikes, burglary, theft, felony driving under the influence, drug possession, and manufacture and sales trials. In addition, Joe tried numerous misdemeanor cases including driving under the influence and domestic violence, and conducted countless juvenile adjudications and preliminary hearings.
SEX CRIMES EXPERTISE
At various times in his career, Joe was assigned to the Victim Impact Program (V.I.P.) which vertically prosecuted sex crimes, felony domestic violence, and stalking. As a V.I.P. prosecutor, Joe was responsible for interviewing victims with law enforcement, determining whether a crime had occurred, filing charges in the case, and personally handling the case through jury trial, if necessary.
In one of Joe's jury trials as a defense attorney, the client was one of four defendants charged by the Major Narcotics Unit with felony child abuse, and manufacturing and possession for sale of a large quantity of PCP. After Joe's cross examination of the police officers and prosecution experts, and the presentation of a defense expert, the judge dismissed the case against the client before the jury had the opportunity to reach a decision.
Joe is regarded as an elite criminal defense attorney since leaving the District Attorney's Office to pursue private practice in October of 2008 with his partner, Anthony Falangetti. Joe is a creative and critical thinker with a comforting bed-side manner who utilizes his knowledge of the prosecutor's job, his trial skills, and his professional relationships to achieve the best possible result for his clients.
As a defense attorney, Joe has obtained several dismissals and reductions for his clients, and Joe's peers often seek his advice on legal issues and jury trial tactics. Attorney Weimortz has recently been included in the list of California Super Lawyers® for 2014, an honor given to less than 5% of lawyers throughout the state.

Saved My Father's Life
This review is long overdue. It’s been a year since my father was released from prison with all charges dismissed . I’ve realized that I’ve delayed writing this review, because it’s difficult to revisit what has been the hardest time of my life. Nonetheless, I think it would be a great disservice if...

Joseph Weimortz & Team is the BEST representation for you!
My sons and I retained Joseph Weimortz to represent my husband in a very serious case. My husband was charged with 9 felony counts of Penal Code Section 288. Each count was 15 years to life totaling 135 years to life total possible sentence. He was being falsely accused and in a blink of an eye o...

SIMPLY THE BEST !
I was charged with 13 misdemeanors, one which carried lifetime sex registration. I hired Joe and his office to represent me after firing the first lawyer I hired trying to save a few bucks. Although Joe wasn't cheap he more than earned his fees and in the end I felt the price was actually a great dea...

Joe helped me out during a tough time in my life. Joe took a situation that looked dire and hopeless (2 major felonies) and turned it into a situation that saved my career. Due to his tireless and creative lawyering I witnessed first hand Joe's ability to professionally cooperate with a District At...
"I first met Joe Weimortz when he was a deputy district attorney. He was opposing counsel in a felony criminal case. He was one of the most ethical, professional, fair and hardworking D.A's I had ever gone up against. Since he became a defense attorney, we have worked on numerous cases and have tried approximately four trials together. Two of the successful cases were lengthy trials. We defended a sheriff in a manslaughter case. He was accused of running over and killing a 90 year old woman as she walked in the cross-walk. The trial lasted over a month and resulted in a dismissal. We also defended a deputy district attorney accused of being passed out behind the wheel in a car that was blocking traffic five from the curb. We put on the first ever sleep drunkeness (confusional arousal disorder) defense. The trial lasted over two weeks and resulted in a 40 minute not guilty. Mr. Weimortz is one of the most talented attorneys I have worked with in criminal cases."
"I was first introduced to Joe through a mutual friend at the DA's office. After he started his own practice, Joe quickly set the bar as to what is means to be a top criminal defense attorney. Joe is outstanding in court, is extremely well respected by prosecutors and judges alike, and is unwaivering in his commitment to the defense of his clients. I highly and unequivocally recommend Joe."
"I worked with Joe when we were both prosecutors in the L.A. District Attorney's Office. I've also seen him in court both as a prosecutor and now as a defense attorney. Joe is a top notch attorney who is extremely competent. He is also an excellent trial attorney and will fight for his clients. I definitely endorse Joe."
"Joe represented a family member of mine in a serious criminal matter. I personally witnessed Joe prepare this case for a good resolution but when the district attorney refused to offer an acceptable plea Joe proceeded to trial. I saw first hand his exceptional trial skills. After nearly three weeks of trial, the jury came back with a 12-0 not guilty verdict. Joe is a top tier trial lawyer."
"Trustworthy defense lawyer who is dedicated to providing the best possible representation for his clients."
