Lack of Preparation and Experience Led to Devastating Outcome

My experience with Summer Squires was deeply disappointing and had long-lasting consequences for my custody case. I retained her through McFarling Law during a critical point in my case—after I had already secured full custody on my own. I was facing a potential legal challenge and hired the firm ...out of fear and urgency. Unfortunately, Summer’s lack of preparation and courtroom experience severely impacted the outcome. The night before the hearing, I received confirmation that the court date was set. However, just moments before entering the courtroom, I mentioned I wasn’t sure what the hearing was about—and Summer responded, “Me neither.” That exchange alone reflected how unprepared she was. What followed was the complete unraveling of the progress I had fought for on my own. Throughout the process, communication was inconsistent. I had to follow up multiple times to get information about dates and deadlines, yet I was still billed for “communication.” After the hearing, I was visibly upset. Summer sat in my car while I cried—and I was later billed for that time as well. Perhaps most troubling, she gave me guidance “as a mother,” not as a legal professional—advice that could have seriously hurt my case had I acted on it. I hired legal counsel, not personal opinion. The lack of strategic legal guidance, combined with her inexperience and poor communication, left me emotionally and financially devastated. If you’re facing a sensitive custody matter, I strongly urge you to ask hard questions about your representation and insist on someone with the experience and preparation your case deserves. Based on my experience, Summer Squires was not equipped to handle the complexities or seriousness of mine.

We are sorry to hear that you feel disappointed with your experience. However, it’s important to clarify a few points for accuracy. You hired our firm at the very last minute for limited, piecemeal representation. This significantly restricted the amount of preparation time available, and unfortunately, custody related hearings are not something that can be effectively approached without adequate time, planning, and cooperation. We remain committed to transparency in our communication, billing, and representation. For that reason, we strongly encourage anyone considering legal representation to retain counsel as early as possible for proper preparation, and not in an unbundled capacity, as this limits the quality and depth of representation an attorney can provide.
