A straight-shooter, Jay R. Mueller focuses his practice on child custody, child welfare, divorce, domestic violence, DWI defense and family law. Jay brings a calm and sense of peace to his clients' often choatic situations. He has been a practicing attorney since 2002 and founded his firm in 2006.
 
Jay earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from New Mexico Highlands University and studied law at the University of New Mexico School of Law. 
 
While a student, Jay served as both an enlisted member and later commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve and Army National Guard.
He served with HHB, 6th BN, 200th Air Defense Artillery, New Mexico Army National Guard as well he was a First Lieutenant in the Military Police Corps in the U.S. Army Reserve.
 
He has authored legal articles. His research concerning Navajo traditional law was published in the Tribal Law Journal at the University of New Mexico's School of Law. Jay is also currently writing a family law and child custody book for the general public.
 
During his legal studies, Jay worked on family law cases, DWI and criminal defense, as well as Native American issues. He researched family law issues for the Navajo Nation Solicitor and won his first DWI case in the Pueblo of Isleta Tribal Court. 
 
In the last several years Jay has received specialized legal training provided by the Children's Law Institute and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. This training has been focused on children's welfare law, mediation and conflict resolution, and courtroom techniques.
 
Jay has represented people with respect to divorce, child custody, domestic violence and DWI cases for over fourteen years! In the past we enjoyed a special relationship with the Second and Thirteenth Judicial District Children's Courts and continue to serve as Court-appointed counsel in various family law and children's court cases. Jay welcomes appointment as a guardian ad litem in "high conflict" child custody cases.
 
Jay has represented hundreds of parents, children, and teens in child custody, child support, domestic violence, divorces, and civil child abuse/neglect proceedings in various district courts and children's courts in Albuquerque, Grants, Las Vegas, Los Lunas, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, and the New Mexico Court of Appeals.

Great attorney!
Mr Mueller, Has done an excellent job on my case. I’m a single, morther who had an ugly, divorce and child, custody case. Mr Mueller, took his time to explain, understand, and made me feel comfortable to hire him. I shopped around for attorneys, before and all they wanted is “money” not to interested about taking my case. Mr Mueller, Made me feel like I mattered and comfortable and called me just to check up on me before and after the hearings. Also just to check up on me to see if I’m doing okay. My money, has been spent well. I’ve spent over $15,000 on other Lawyers. And nothing got done money lost and time. Is the worst feeling. If you’re looking for a great attorney hire Mr. Mueller! You well not be disappointed.

Always there for you
I went through 5 DWI's with Jay, and was only convicted of 3. He kept me out of jail and knew all my judges personally. He's a man of God and a man of his word. I highly recommend him to anyone! He'll get you what's better than fair and never judges his clients for their crimes. He's there to help defend you, and he will do an exceptional job.

Great lawyer and happy with overall services
I have hired four family lawyers over the years and due to my disappointment I end up going pro se! However, a few years later I found myself requiring legal services again and even though I was hesitant to dish out thousands of dollars again and take another risk trying to find a good lawyer I have to say I am so thankful I finally found Mr. Mueller! I have been extremely satisfied with the services I received. He was not only responsive and timely to all my emails, he was on time to all court hearings, provided me my legal documents timely but he was also affordable. The entire process felt more like a partnership versus just hiring a stranger to represent me. I didn't have to go through a secretary or a legal aid, I always communicated directly with Mr. Mueller. All of these factors are key not only from a financial perspective but when it comes to my children I need to know that my lawyer is truly fighting for me and not just collecting! Highly recommend

Professional and a very competent family law attorney

A passionate ally through the worst of times
I first hired Jay Mueller to help me write my will and then later to advocate for me in a conflict with my ex regarding division of property we had owned jointly. My ex was refusing to honor the terms of our agreement and he was able to secure an efficient and favorable outcome to the potentially prolonged and costly dispute. I have since recommended him to numerous family members, friends, clients and co-workers; none have had a negative experience. Working with him over the last six years has caused me to revise my general opinion of his profession upwards. Satisfied client
I have hired Jay Mueller on 4 different occasions for DWI cases. He met with me personally multiple times and gave sincere support and concrete advice. 2 of the 4 were dismissed and he kept me from doing jail time after all my mistakes. I would refer him to ANYONE. He is a brilliant God filled man and lawyer. And does all different kinds of cases not just dwi.

Find anyone else
Jay was completely unprepared for my court date. He didn't prepare an argument, wasn't ready for cross-examination, and in fact didn't even review (or even have knowledge of) evidence the Plaintiff's brought to court. He actually advised me to admit to all of the allegations brought against me in writing prior to the initial court date so the judge would have "both sides of the story". I feel like I would have been better off with no attorney than with Jay.
