Kathleen A McCarthy

From childhood I have had a keen passion for social justice, which was the catalyst inspiring my choice of a career in law. With a law degree fresh in hand from the UA in 1976, I waded headlong into the risky and exciting process of opening my own practice, which today is called The McCarthy Law Firm – Southern Arizona’s largest dedicated family law firm. I spent the first five years of my practice trying to learn about everything, all at once, from family law, business, real estate, juvenile court, secured transactions, bankruptcy, personal injury and, yes, even criminal law issues. It was then that I discovered how much I was drawn to family law and decided to specialize in this area. I quickly realized that while my family law clients required legal services, more than anything they needed a process that would help them heal from the deeply personal and disruptive emotional turmoil that led them to divorce. This realization caused me to take a hard look at how lawyers can help facilitate this healing, mostly by maintaining a laser sharp focus on their client’s needs, a willingness to truly listen and inform without judgment and rapid responsiveness.

I am passionate about raising the quality of legal services provided to the public and part of my public service is to provide free legal education for basically anyone who will listen, including lawyers, judges, accountants and the public. You may have seen some of my articles in the Tucson Desert Leaf covering such topics as alimony, prenuptial agreements, separate and community property, hidden assets, business valuation and tips for effective settlement agreements. I have presented at close to 200 conferences covering all of these topics and more, including stress management. Since 1995 I have presented regular law updates to lawyers and judges several times a year. In 2017 I wrote the “Spousal Maintenance Handbook for family law judges”.

I have assembled a team of highly skilled, resourceful and specially trained professionals at The McCarthy Law Firm who are committed to the delivery of the highest quality of personal care, responsiveness and distinctive service to each of our clients. Although I personally specialize in complex asset matters, including business valuations and spousal maintenance, the McCarthy Law Firm provides affordable legal services covering a wide range of family law issues.

I dearly love Tucson with all of its canyons, mountains, bike paths and culture. When I am not practicing law, I especially enjoy running, hiking, cycling and immersing myself in nature.

I am Board-certified as a Family Law specialist by the Arizona Board of Legal Specialization; been a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers since 1996; listed in Best Lawyers in America since 1995 and recognized by Southwest Super Lawyers.
