It's a little like pulling your own tooth. You could do it. But what if it gets infected? What if you break the tooth? What if you damage the nerve? Chances are, the expense and pain of the cleanup is more than if you'd have just made the appointment to let the professional do their job. That's why you hear the horror stories.
