Jason John Ruen

When Jason Ruen’s father was struck from behind by a commercial truck while driving a tractor for his job with Texas A&M University, the violent crash flipped the tractor and left John Ruen with permanent nerve damage in his shoulder and arm. Jason rushed to the hospital to find his father bleeding, bruised, in pain, and trying to check himself out of the emergency room because he was more worried about the medical bills than his own injuries. That moment changed the course of Jason’s career.

A conflict of interest at Jason’s then-firm prevented him from representing his father directly, so he placed John with a trusted personal injury lawyer. The case eventually settled, but John never fully recovered. Jason did, however — by walking away from civil defense work for good and committing the rest of his career to standing on the other side of the courtroom. Since that day, every client he represents gets the same service his father deserved: someone who fights for the injured person, not the insurance company.

A nontraditional path to the courtroom
Originally from Lanesboro, Minnesota, Jason earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English from Sam Houston State University before teaching at Huntsville High School, Sam Houston State University, and Lone Star College. He later worked as a Financial Services Associate with Prudential Financial, where he earned his Series 7 stockbroker and Group 1 insurance licenses and helped numerous families plan for what comes next. That combination of teaching, financial literacy, and a deep respect for the written word shapes how he communicates today — with juries, with opposing counsel, and with the clients sitting across from him at the kitchen table.

Jason earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from South Texas College of Law in 2009, where he was awarded the Dean’s Merit Scholarship and inducted into the Order of the Lytae and Phi Delta Phi. He served as Assistant Articles Editor of the South Texas Law Review and authored “Selling Your Death: Regulating Investor-Initiated Life Insurance Contracts as Securities,” drawing on his financial-services background to examine the dangers and benefits of stranger-owned life insurance policies being repackaged as investment vehicles. During law school, he worked at firms covering criminal defense, qui tam, maritime insurance, and personal injury defense — a breadth of experience that taught him how the other side thinks and how they build their cases.

From insurance defense to the people’s side
Jason began his professional career as a civil defense attorney, focusing on Defense Base Act, Jones Act, Longshore Act, and Texas state civil personal injury matters. After his father’s accident, he crossed the aisle for good. He has since served as Managing Executive Attorney at Trust Guss Injury Lawyers and as a Managing Attorney of litigation, intake, investigation, and onboarding at the Amaro Law Firm in Houston — roles where he built and led the teams that turn injured clients into compensated clients.

In early 2026, Jason relocated to Arizona to help launch Law Bear, where he now serves as Managing Attorney. He represents Arizonans injured in:

Jason is a devoted husband and father of two, and he shares his home with the dogs he loves probably a little too much. He is a long-distance runner who has completed three marathons and numerous other distance races — a pursuit that mirrors how he approaches a case file: pace, preparation, and the willingness to stay on the road long after most people have stopped. He is also a lifelong reader, a habit that has yet to fail him in cross-examination.
