also known as Bill Smith, William L. Smith
William L. “Bill” Smith is an Idaho trial lawyer and founding partner of Smith Horras, P.A., where he represents people and families in serious personal injury, wrongful death, trucking, and other high-stakes civil cases.
Smith has practiced law in Idaho since graduating from law school in 1999. Early in his career, he served as a judicial law clerk to Idaho District Judge J. William “Bill” Hart. That experience gave him an early education in how cases are actually tried, how judges evaluate lawyers and evidence, and how juries respond to the stories presented in a courtroom.
Smith has spent his career representing real people rather than insurance companies. He has tried significant civil cases in Idaho state courts and has developed a particular interest in cases involving catastrophic injuries, commercial vehicles, trucking companies, and serious crashes on Idaho's highways.
That interest has increasingly focused on Interstate 84, the commercial transportation corridor that runs across southern Idaho. Smith has handled and tried cases arising from serious crashes along the I-84 corridor, including in rural Idaho communities where trucking and commercial transportation are part of everyday life. His experience in these cases has reinforced his interest in understanding not simply how a crash happened, but the decisions, safety practices, evidence, and corporate conduct behind it.
Smith's practice is not limited to trucking. He represents people suffering serious injuries from motor-vehicle crashes, dangerous commercial conduct, serious pedestrian injuries and other preventable events, as well as families pursuing wrongful-death claims. He also selectively handles significant civil-rights and institutional-accountability cases when the circumstances fit the firm's trial practice and mission.
Smith approaches cases as a trial lawyer. He believes serious cases require careful investigation, command of the evidence, relentless preparation, and the willingness to present a client's case to a jury when a fair resolution cannot otherwise be reached. His objective is not simply to process claims, but to understand what happened, why it happened, how it changed his client's life, and how to communicate that truth clearly and persuasively.
Smith co-founded Smith Horras in 2007. The Boise-based firm represents injured people and families throughout Idaho. Its lawyers emphasize personal attention, serious preparation, and trial advocacy while deliberately maintaining the ability to know their clients as people rather than case numbers.
For Smith, that client relationship is central to the work. Behind every serious injury case is a person whose life has been disrupted and a family trying to determine what comes next. His job is to learn their story, master the facts, hold responsible parties accountable, and give the client a strong voice in the civil justice system.
