Attorney Maxel G. Moreland is a dedicated criminal defense lawyer with extensive trial and litigation experience. Before joining Black, Blink & Associates, Maxel served as a Senior Deputy Public Defender with the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office in Colorado Springs, where he practiced for seven years. During that time, he represented hundreds of clients simultaneously, handling a wide range of felony and misdemeanor cases and completing over 50 trials.
Maxel is known for his tenacious advocacy and his ability to craft strategic defenses in even the most complex cases. He has successfully defended clients at every stage of the criminal process—from bail hearings and motions practice to jury trials and appeals. His practice spans the full spectrum of criminal matters, including DUI/DWAI, domestic violence, probation revocations, assaults, sex offenses, theft, financial crimes, drug charges, firearm and weapon cases, and homicide. With years of experience in El Paso County courtrooms, Maxel brings invaluable insight into how local prosecutors and judges approach cases.
In addition to his courtroom work, Maxel has trained and mentored other attorneys, further strengthening his commitment to high-quality defense representation. Prior to his work in Colorado, he served as a fellow with the Ohio Innocence Project and as a legal intern with the Hamilton County Public Defender’s Office, gaining early experience in post-conviction innocence claims, felony defense, and indigent representation.
Maxel earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati College of Law, where he served as Blog Chair for the University of Cincinnati Law Review and as Senior Article Editor for the Human Rights Quarterly. He also served as the inaugural president of the National Association for Public Defense – Bearcat Chapter and director of the Tenant Information Project. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from The Ohio State University.
Originally from Ohio, Maxel has called Colorado home since 2017. Outside the courtroom, he enjoys traveling, attending live music events, playing board games, and exploring the outdoors.
