That crisis is the... growing denial of access to justice for pro se litigants—citizens who, often by necessity, represent themselves in court without the benefit of legal counsel. We are not lawyers. Many of us never intended to take on this role. But for low- and modest-income families, especially those already facing life-altering hardships, legal representation is a luxury they cannot afford. Court-appointed attorneys—when they are made available—are often stretched too thin, under-resourced, or simply unequipped to serve the deeper, more complex needs of the people they are meant to protect. As a result, more and more citizens are forced to navigate the labyrinth of legal systems alone. But what happens when we try? We are often met with skepticism, silence, or outright obstruction. Motions go unheard. Evidence is ignored. Procedural errors, rather than being gently corrected as the law allows, are weaponized to dismiss legitimate claims. The courts—institutions meant to serve all people—are being shaped into fortresses accessible only to the trained or the wealthy. This is not justice. This is an erosion of a fundamental right. Pro se litigants deserve dignity, support, and meaningful access to the courts. The judicial system should not require a law degree to be heard. Yet no meaningful infrastructure exists to educate or empower us. Free legal clinics are rare, limited, or nonexistent in many counties. Court clerks are often prohibited from offering any substantive guidance. And while legal aid organizations do heroic work, they are simply overwhelmed and underfunded. We need change. We need public funding for legal self-help centers in every courthouse. We need judges who see the person behind the paperwork. We need educational resources designed not for law students, but for neighbors, workers, single parents, and elders—those for whom the stakes of justice are often life itself. And above all, we need recognition that being pro se is not a failing, but a right—one guaranteed under our Constitution and worthy of respect. To deny people the right to be heard simply because they are poor, untrained, or unfamiliar with legal language is to turn justice into a privilege, not a right. I urge the public, the courts, and our lawmakers to take this crisis seriously—before access to justice becomes a memory, not a mandate.
