My ex-husband and his new wife filed suit against me to modify his child support. I am in the oil and gas industry and had lost my job a year and a half ago and was without comparable work and pay for a year. At the time the suit was brought against me, I was barely making ends meet and had to modify... my living arrangements (I’m certain he counted on me not being able to financially afford to retain representation) – and he was right. I tried to Answer his Petition and was considering representing myself. He was asking that his child support be reduced by almost $600/mo. and was also asking for me to pay his attorney fees. After further prayer and thought, I knew this was a risk that I could not take, so I began praying that God would make a way for me to be able to afford representation and I began praying he’d put the right attorney in front of me. I was speaking with an old friend and he told me about Julia. She represented him in a modification suit where his ex-wife was wanting a modification for an increase. He said Julia is super sharp, on top of her game and a fighter. That is exactly who and what I needed. One week before mediation I received a bonus from my company and it was enough for me to make an initial payment to retain Julia (thank you Jesus). After speaking with her, she immediately made me feel more at ease about the situation. Odds were stacked against me, but she told me her own personal story and I knew she was passionate about her cause and was not looking for just another dollar, but to truly help me and more importantly, my son. During our proceedings we had to mediate twice, had a temporary hearing (of which the judge didn’t make any modifications at that time), and then a final hearing. Throughout the entire ordeal Julia was always reachable and was very diligent about returning my calls, emails or text messages. She was very passionate about my case and exuded confidence and compassion. She knew the law, but still spent countless hours reviewing my case, reviewing the law, reviewing other cases to reference in my suit, and was always very well prepared. She always acted in a professional manner (even when other representation didn’t always). The case was being heard in a small town, of whom, my ex’s attorney regularly practiced. Julia had only practiced just a few times in this town and therefore, had no previous knowledge on how this judge typically rules, and she was the outsider. While in mediation, she was effectively presenting that my ex-husband was under-employing himself, so that he could have the child support reduced, the mediator tells us that the odds are stacked against us that the judge would never rule in our favor. Julia did not see this as a negative, but kept her composure and her professionalism, and saw it rather as a challenge. She put together a brief on my case, all the financials and timelines of my ex’s work history, reason for leaving jobs, ect. and presented it to the judge, even after the mediator had told us the judge wouldn’t even read it. Ultimately, the judge read her brief. We left the court room with my ex having to pay me more per month than what he was paying me when he filed the suit. Julia fought long and hard for me. Julia continuously exercised unprecedented poise and professionalism. She’s a compassionate, smart attorney that will stay up all night working on your case. If Julia accepts your case, she gives you her all! You will have hired a warrior! She prepares for her battles and she will do all she can to make sure you win your war! It's hard enough to navigate through all the complex issues and procedures for custody modifications. Julia is highly proficient with the legal issues and procedures. She is also terrific with strategies to aid the process. Julia is top notch in all of the above. What was even more impressive is that... Julia cares about the people and issues in each case. Some attorneys are clinical or mechanical about clients, but it's obvious that Julia isn't just going through the motions. That's refreshing and it really helps knowing that your counsel is as passionate about your issues as you are. Family court can also be a difficult place for father's. It sometimes feels like the deck is stacked against dads. Julia definitely leveled the playing field and I'm more than happy with the results. Julia represented my daughter in a complex situation dealing with child support/custody case against the father of their infant daughter and against CPS. She entered into the case after several very experienced lawyers representing other parties had already made a mess of the situation. Julia quick...ly got a grasp on the status of the legal mess created by others and moved it toward the best possible outcome for my daughter and granddaughter. There are several things that impress me about the way Julia handled things. While she was polished and professional at all times, she was also brutal and very smart in negotiating with the opposing side. She knows her way around the court house and how to leverage her extensive contacts and experience to the advantage of my daughter's case. It was clear to me that Julia knew the law and procedures better than opposing counsel and was always one step ahead of them. While she was excellent dealing with the legal aspects of the cases, Julia was equally skilled in helping my young and inexperienced daughter through the process. She explained the legal issues clearly, provided forward looking advice all along the way, and offered motherly, compassionate encouragement to my daughter that continues to help her become a great young mother herself. From the beginning, Julia maintained a great working relationship with us and skated the ethical edge of representing my daughter knowing that I was paying the bills.
