I'm a tax and estate planning attorney, focusing on foreign tax compliance and high-net-worth estate planning for individuals.  When I'm not practicing law, I spend my time with my wife Emily and our rescued mutts Griswold and Molly, I run marathons (40 as of 3/23/17), and I volunteer with the Boy Scouts.

My focuses on taking care of individuals and their planning issues. I'm certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in both Tax Law and Estate Planning and Probate Law.

  • I help clients with their estate planning, which includes drafting wills, powers of attorney, and the other documents needed to plan for death and incapacity; reviewing existing wills and trusts; and advising trustees about their trusts.
  • I help clients with their personal tax planning, including income tax planning for their business.
  • For individuals with assets in the US and elsewhere, either because they’re US persons with assets abroad or nonresidents considering investments here in the US, I help manage the international tax issues.
  • Beyond tax planning for the business, I’m here to help with starting the business or making sure that things are running well. For more complicated corporate work, I’ll either work with (if the client wants me to be involved), or refer the matter to (if they don’t), those with the right experience. Another way to put it is that I can help “start the business” and “better the business,” but I’m not always the guy for the “bet the business” work.
  • And when someone has died, I help administer the decedent’s estate.

While it sounds like a wide range of disparate and unrelated practices, I see it as a related set of skills that helps clients get the legal pieces in place so that they can focus on what they want to and know that they legal side is handled.

Perfect for me and my wife
My wife and I have two young children and a mortgage - that was enough for us to want to plan our estate, but we were worried that a good attorney would be too expensive or, frankly, not interested in working with us because we don't have a ton of investments or assets. John put all those concerns at ease. John was the perfect lawyer for us - not only was he considerate and willing to give us as much of his time as we needed, but he made the entire process easy to understand. He answered all of our questions and tailored our estate planning to our specific needs. I cannot recommend him strongly enough.

Great Tax Planning Lawyer
I hired John to handle my tax planning needs. He is one of the few lawyers out there who does a great job and goes out of his way to save his clients money. I will keep using him for all of my transactional legal needs.

Estate Expertise
John was very helpful in assisting me with an estate that I went from alternate to independent executor on. I had no previous knowledge of what was required, but he was clear in explaining my role, easy to talk with and helped me understand what was needed of me. He was responsive to my requests and timely in following up on the status of things. He is a very kind and patient person and made my role easier. I would highly recommend his legal services and plan to use him for my estate matters.

This was my first time using ?John for legal services. He was really easy to talk with and laid everything out very clearly from the first meeting. I couldn't be more happy with the service I received from Strohmeyer law I plan on using them in the future and recommend others do also.

Thorough and reassuring.
John is very good at walking through every nuance of estate planning without allowing clients to get bogged down in unnecessary detail. His reassuring attitude was confidence-inspiring, and we feel much better knowing that he is looking out for our family.

Superior Customer Service and Attention
My wife and I recently had our first child and engaged John to draft wills and estate planning documents for our family. We had a lot of questions and concerns about what to do. John was a godsend; he did a fantastic job answering questions, explaining scenarios and choices, and in drafting our documents in a prompt fashion. He really cares about his clients and his level of attention and service reflect it. We were thoroughly satisfied with the value we received and have peace of mind about the future of our estate. We highly recommend him.

Will Probate
I was in need of an attorney to probate my mother's will. Through referrals, I was connected with John Strohmeyer. I spoke to his paralegal, Heather within 24 hours of the recommendation, who was incredibly helpful and put me at ease. She scheduled a phone consultation and I spoke to John the next afternoon. He took time listening to my concerns and explained the process very clearly. He is also very easy to talk to and I was able to speak candidly about my situation and my family dynamic. After our phone call, I felt more confident in moving forward.

Great lawyer and a person
I needed to create a trust and was referred to Mr. Strohmeyer by a law professor at UH. Mr. Strohmeyer gave me the best advice -- we were about to move to anotehr state and when he came to knwo about it, he said do it in the state where we are moving and not waste time or money doing one in Texas. He also gave some referrals and gave soem really good advice. Really a good person as well.

Excellent experience
We engaged John to revamp our wills and other legal documents after relocating from New York to Texas this summer. John was extremely knowledgeable and worked with us to make sure we understood all the decisions we needed to make. He delivered the work very promptly and even drove from Houston to deliver it to us in Austin. I would highly recommend John.
