James R. Hedlesten

As an attorney, Mr. Hedlesten is professional, knowledgeable, and understanding. As a child psychologist, I have consulted on many cases with Mr. Hedlesten. Each have been a pleasure and enlightening. I remain in awe of how he listens to his clients needs and executes in accordance with their prefere...nce and the law. Most attorneys I am left bewildered by their lack of understanding in the law, family dynamics, child behavior, or basic psychology. Mr. Hedlesten is highly intelligent and intuitive in all these areas and above reproach. First and foremost, he attempts to help the family work through a difficult situation while always thinking of the children and the law. In my opinion, as a psychological consultant and behavioral expert witness, he is the best family law attorney in the greater Houston area.

James Hedlesten deserves the highest praise for being an ethical and honest lawyer. In addition he is smart, tough and eloquent in the courtroom. I wish we had hired James at the beginning of the divorce process but we did not and consequently have continued to have problems with the ex-husband, subs...tance abuse and visitation with 2 young children. James has gone to battle for us so that these young children have a chance to grow up to be healthy and happy. Now we are able to sleep at night knowing that James will stand toe to toe with anyone and win. His knowledge of the law and empathy for his clients makes him a force to be reckoned with. Just wish we had found him sooner.

I did endless amounts of research to find a good attorney for my custody case after being totally taken advantage of by my divorce attorney. I spoke with a few all we’re giving no signs of hope to drop a temporary order that was filed against me. James called me on a Sunday and he was the first one... that did not say it was a hopeless matter. He always responds he gives clear consistent answers and when I would get anxious he would stop me and tell me what was going to happen and it was always accurate. We against all odds got through not one but two hearings for the same matter both not giving relief to my ex husband on his temporary order. He has been a blessing and moving forward with my custody modification I’m confident it will take a turn to be ruled in my favor. He is a force when he walks into the court room, goes above and beyond to get the result that we were set out to get. James restored my faith in attorney’s and with him representing me I don’t walk in to court nervous about the outcome because I know he won’t back down until we are satisfied with the outcome. My back was to the wall in November 2018. My kids future was on the line and I felt I would fail them if their father succeeded in his plan and I would not be able to defend their dreams and passions of staying in basketball. They LOVE basketball! I was in the dark after my previous attorney did me ...a horrible injustice but then everything changed.....When I came to James in November of 2017, my past attorney had just withdrew off my case after he called me a bit-- twice in mediation with well known mediator. Please beware of her! Past attorney was not even present for the mediation and arrived late after I called him upset that mediator said if I do not sign the terms, that the Judge could take my kids from me and the father given full custody. This was not a case of custody, just of visitation. My trial court was scheduled for the following month in December and I had paid my $6,500 retainer fee to past attorney and he said it was exhausted. I was interviewing with other attorneys after being called out of my name twice and they told me the same thing, that a father getting standard visitation is pretty normal and the Judge would most likely give it. I was not trying to keep the kids away from Dad but their father works M-S 8 am to 9-10 pm at night, so whats the point, he is not with them? My goal was for the kids to remain with me and stay with their passions of basketball and games are on Sat. (Their father said he would not have any part in getting them to and from and neither would step mom). Since the other attorneys said their Dad would most likely win and as a single mom I did not want to come out another retainer fee to have a negative result, I was very near to throwing in the towel. I even called OC (opposing counsel) to say forget this, but then my heart kept telling me to fight for what is right and that my kids and their present and current future is worth so much more to keep fighting for them. So, I said I think I can and I did! I held steadfast and did a Facebook post asking for referrals of great family law attorneys and an old friend spoke very highly of James and recommended him. I scheduled a consult and James heard me out and asked what did I want. I told him and he said ok with a specific game plan and said let's move forward. I felt strong in my heart that he will defend me and my kids and fight for what is right. When trial was getting near I was getting nervous as to if the KHA team and James were properly prepared because I am just a perfectionist when it comes to this very important matter of trial for my kids and their future. Trial came and let me tell you that James put Opposing Counsel in their place with his robust knowledge of the law. I can not tell you how amazing this man is in a court room! His team prepared with large binders full of my files marked, flagged and organized. James is by far a SUPER ATTORNEY! He and his TEAM is THE BEST! I communicated with Debra quite often and she was very real and honest even at times I may not have wanted to hear what she told me. James and the KHA team will shoot straight to you and not BS you like the others will. James holds family law so close to his heart and it shines bright in the court room! Spiritual favor surrounds this man! I even designed him a superman character with his face on top of the family law building and he framed it and put it in his office! Sure wish I could add an image on here. My kids are ecstatic they can follow their dreams and remain in basketball and attend Saturday games. They hope to get a scholarship to college and play in the NBA! I walked out of that courtroom a VICTOR! We won the WAR and JAMES and HIS TEAM were right there with us! James handled custody for my 3 year-old boy. He consistently showed what a professional he was compared to other attorneys. I had a consultation with someone before I hired James, and they made me feel like I should already throw in the towel and accept that I'd only get standard visitation. James... listened, said, "If that's what you want to do, then let's do it. When do you want to start?" He was always on top of things like paperwork, things that would be required in the future, and just always had his gameplan a few steps ahead of the others. He thinks on his feet and his mind is always working and ready to go. James was also very mindful of my money, being willing to take the quickest way to results, rather than drawing something out through court unnecessarily, which would just cost me more money and more of his time.
