Stopping Canadian Goose "Roundups"
N/AOUTCOME: Successful
Ms. Wolfe was involved in a lawsuit to stop the U.S. government and the State of Michigan from conducting Canadian Goose "roundups." They use the term "roundups" to disguise the cruelty of their acti ... vity which is actually the capturing and killing of Canadian Geese purportedly as a means of reducing their populations as a "nuisance" species. Insidiously they this nothing more than misleading propaganda. While these cruel "roundups" reduce population numbers at the time they are conducted, they actually drive population numbers up immediately after the roundups. The reason is that they leave a much smaller population that allows for more resources (more food and water) per bird. That enables the survivors to grow very healthy and more fertile resulting in radically increased births which of course drive the population up dramatically. Ms. Wolfe learned in her wildlife management courses in college over 45 years ago that killing a large number of a species is a technique often used by the national, state, and local governments to artificially inflate animal populations for the purpose of hunting. If these these techniques were not used at all animal populations would fluctuate gently from year to year without overpopulation or the ostensible need for killing/hunting. The lawsuit Ms. Wolfe was involved in sought to stop the federal and state governments from conducting such "roundups." Ms. Wolfe and others successfully obtained a temporary restraining order preventing the them but unfortunately it was ultimately dissolved after the governments unjustly brought the full weight of their powers to bear in their favor. While Ms. Wolfe and her allies were not able to stop the "roundups" indefinitely they did demonstrate that the governments can be stopped. Hopefully this serves as an education for the public to understand the propaganda issued by the governments to further the activity of killing, the cruelty of which they try to obscure by the term "hunting." A rose by any other name is a rose and a killing by any other name is a killing.
