Richard Huges forgot about my court date so I received a $4000 judgement which still haunts me!

I hired Mr Hughes to handle a simple case for me in which a landscaper had done a very poor job installing a retaining wall and a flagstone patio. I tried getting the landscaper, Matt Phillips, to repair his work but he refused and was trying to sue me for the remainder of payment. I had already pa...id him $10,000 and owed him $2000 but I was holding off paying the balance until he repaired my patio which was an absolute disaster. I paid Richard Hughes to represent me in small claims court but when the court date came around, Mr Hughes completely forgot about it until the day before. He called me telling me he had forgotten about the court date and told me there was no reason for me to go to court since the landscaper would not accept a smaller amount as the last minute settlement offer he had presented to him. I had not prepared to go to court alone so I went on the advice of my attorney and did not go. I only owed, $2000 for the balance of the botched patio but the landscaper was able to get a $4000 judgment against me, thanks to my attorney, Richard Hughes who charged me $750 for doing nothing.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
