Great attorney and staff

Mr. Schmidt and his staff were extremely helpful every step of the way. I was in a car accident with 2 other people, he helped me find a doctor for my neck and shoulder injury and found a physical therapist close to my work so I could receive treatment during my lunch break. My settlement was fair an...d he helped me handle me recover money for my property damage!

"I endorse this lawyer. He is not afraid to stand up to big corporations like BP. Through the BP Gulf Oil Spill litigation, which continues to this day, he has shown that he will go til the end fighting for his clients. He has negotiated many economic loss claims and is just ramping up for personal injury litigation."

Professional misconduct

This lawyer was disciplined by a state licensing authority in 2016.

Reciprocal - Reprimand issued in LA, 2016

updated on 05/22/2020

This means the attorney did something wrong in another state, but can still practice law in Louisiana. Typically in this case the lawyer's poor behavior is exposed to the public in hopes that he or she will not repeat the behavior.

Douglas’s comment:

“This was instigated by a defense law firm 2005 RR Wreck . This was not as a result of a complaint from a CLIENT! I have never been disciplined because of a CLIENT'S COMPLAINT. I filed lawsuits for these clients, because they had settled their cases without the benefit of a lawyer. The railroad took advantage of these clients, in my professional opinion. The client's did not give back their money before filing suit to get these very low settlements overturned. I WILL ALWAYS FIGHT INJUSTICE!”

Public Reprimand issued in SC, 2015

updated on 05/20/2020

Public reprimand means an attorney did something wrong but may still practice law. The State gives the lawyer a public reprimand in hopes that he or she will not repeat the behavior. Details of the infraction are made part of the public record.

Douglas’s comment:

“South Carolina is where the complaint started, see comment above on Louisiana. In most states, if not all, the client is not required to return settlement money before trying to overturn an unjust settlement amount. Most of these people had spent the settlement money and could not return it. There was also some case law, where the client did not have to return the money before filing suit. This all resulted from a terrible train derailment in 2005 in which many lives were lost due to chlorine.”

Reciprocal - Reprimand issued in LA, 2008

This means the attorney did something wrong in another state, but can still practice law in Louisiana. Typically in this case the lawyer's poor behavior is exposed to the public in hopes that he or she will not repeat the behavior.

Douglas’s comment:

“This discipline was not brought by a CLIENT! This was a complaint from an attorney not associated with the case. He was asked by a defense firm to look into the matter and file a complaint. This stemmed from advertising in the newspaper. The main substance of the complaint was that I did not include my law office location in the advertisement. This was from the 2005 Graniteville Train Derailment in South Carolina. This wreck resulted in the loss of many lives due to chlorine exposure.”
