Biography

DOUGLAS DEPEW is the owner of the Depew Law Firm in Neodesha, Kansas. He graduated from Independence, Kansas Community College in 1975 (A.A.), Washburn University in 1977 (B.B.A.) and Washburn Law School in 1980. He has served as President of the Southeast Kansas Bar Association, the Thirty-First Judicial District Bar Association, and the Wilson County Bar Association. Mr. Depew has served as Neodesha City Attorney since 1983 and served as counsel for Radiant Electric Cooperative in Fredonia, Kansas from 1989-2019. He has also served as Acting Wilson County Attorney, Special Assistant Wilson County Attorney, Special Prosecutor for Wilson County and Municipal Judge pro tem for the City of Fredonia. Doug served on the Board of Directors of a publicly-traded bank holding company, First Independence Corporation, from 2009-2015. The majority of his practice consists of representing consumer and small business debtors across southeast Kansas in Kansas bankruptcy court.

Doug Depew has over 35 years experience as a Kansas bankruptcy attorney and has lectured on bankruptcy law topics for the Allen County Bar Association, Four County Bankers Association, Kansas Bar Association, Kansas Trial Lawyers Association, National Business Institute, Southeast Kansas Bar Association, Thirty-First Judicial District Bar Association, and the Wilson County Bar Association. He has been a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys since 1993. In 2004 he was selected by the bankruptcy judges in Kansas to serve on the first Kansas Bankruptcy Bench-Bar Committee. He is co-author of Chapter 3 Exemptions and Prebankruptcy Estate Planning of the Kansas Bar Association's Kansas Bankruptcy Handbook (Third Edition, 2009) and has counseled many clients on Kansas asset protection law and planning. Doug served as President of the Kansas Bar Association's Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section 2013-2014.

Doug has served in leadership positions for various non-profit and civic organizations in the Neodesha, Kansas area. He has served as President of the Neodesha Arts Association, President of the Neodesha Lions Club as well as a Founding Director and Chairman of the Board of the Wilson Medical Center Foundation among other positions. In addition, he has served as a baseball coach for various levels of youth baseball for the Neodesha Recreation Commission.

Bankruptcy

Doug and his staff are just top notch. I felt nervous and all alone facing the fact that I was going to have to file bankruptcy. Doug was very thorough with explaining everything while I was at my initial consultation, which helped put me at ease. Doug and his secretary Kay truly cared about my si...tuation and they truly cared about me as a person. Doug and his staff always communicated well with me and I always knew that help was just a call away.
