Sarah Emily Warner

I am an attorney at a well-respected civil litigation firm in Lawrence, Kansas. Our firm handles all aspects of civil litigation, with an emphasis in business litigation and constitutional issues, as well as entity formation, organization, and growth, and estate planning. 

My own practice focuses on resolving state and federal constitutional claims; contract disputes, including questions of insurance coverage and allegations of bad faith; disputes relating to eminent domain, land use, and real estate; and bodily injury claims.

For the past several years, I also have taught Conflict of Laws as an adjunct professor at Washburn University School of Law in Topeka. The course---which is critical in our increasingly connected society---examines the legal and policy considerations that arise in cases where more than one jurisdiction has an interest in ongoing litigation (whether it be multiple states or federal/state conflicts), how these considerations affect a court’s power to hear the case, and when and how judgments from one state can be recognized in another. 

Although I enjoy all aspects of the law, I have developed a specialty in appellate advocacy. This involves not only successfully briefing and litigating appeals, but also conducting practice sessions for other attorneys preparing to argue cases before the Kansas and federal appellate courts. In developing this appellate skill set, I have worked in the chambers of justices in two state supreme courts (Kansas and Michigan). Most notably, before joining our firm, I worked as chambers counsel to Chief Justice Robert E. Davis of the Kansas Supreme Court for 3 1/2 years. This experience honed my analytical, research, and writing skills, exposed me to a broad spectrum of Kansas and federal law, and allowed me the opportunity to work with one of the finest jurists in the country. The skills I developed during my time at the court prove invaluable in my everyday practice and representation of clients.
