Scott Templeton grew up and graduated from high school in Grinnell, Iowa. His undergraduate studies included participation in the Institute of Comparative Political and Economic Systems at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. which included an internship in the Agency for International Development in the United States Department of State. He graduated in three and 1/2 years from Iowa State University in 1983 with a business degree in Accounting. He worked for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company in public accounting before attending the University of Missouri School of Law in Columbia, Missouri where he received his J.D. degree in 1987. Scott began his legal career as an Assistant Attorney General at the Office of the Missouri Attorney General where he worked in the Criminal and Litigation Division. In that position, he represented the State of Missouri in all of the Missouri Courts of Appeal, the Eighth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals and in the Missouri Supreme Court in the cases of State of Missouri v. Anthony Whitmill and State of Missouri v. David Edwards. He has also appeared in writ of certiorari proceedings before the United States Supreme Court in the death penalty case of State of Missouri v. Samuel McDonald.
Since 1989, he has been engaged in the private practice of law. In 1995, he was selected by the Missouri Bar Foundation to receive the David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Award to recognize outstanding achievement in appellate practice.
Since 1998, Scott has received an AV "Preeminent" rating from Martindale-Hubbell which is the highest rating given for legal ability and ethical standards.
Scott has a wealth of experience in representing personal injury victims. Scott's representation of plaintiffs in bodily injury cases has led to seven figure judgments and settlements. He has also accepted numerous assignments from insurance companies to defend their policy holders in bodily injury cases. Scott has perspective and credibility with both injury victims and insurance companies that better equips him to evaulate cases fairly and often to resolve them without resort to a jury trial.
For the 2014-2015 school year, Scott served as a lecturer in the Legal Environment of Business class at the School of Business at Truman State University while continuing with his civil law pracitce.
Scott's practice areas include representations of plaintiffs in bodily injury cases, representation of defendents in bodily injury cases, worker's compensation, estate planning, estates, probate litigation, business litigation, and other selected areas of law.
Scott is a member of the Adair County Bar Association, the Missouri Bar, the American Bar Association, the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys and the Board of Trustees of the Missouri Bar Foundation.
He is married to Heidi Crist Templeton and has two children, a daughter, Callie, a graduate student at Truman State University and a son, Carter, who is a sophomore at Truman State University.
