Approval after a denial

My case was a difficult to say the least, but our Attorney Tristan Gunn was amazing, took the time to explain every single detail about the process and especially he defended us with all he got. Never seen such passion with an attorney to defend a client and make justice happen. Worth every single pe...nny!

Excellent lawyer

I am extremely happy to have hired Tristan to work on my permanent residency application. He and his team are very knowledgeable, polite and effective. From the beginning, he set clear and realistic expectations taking into consideration all elements of my situation without overpromising. Through...out the process, the team worked on a timely manner providing detailed instructions on what was needed from me so they could move forward. Even when the circumstances of my situation changed unexpectedly during the course of my application, he was able to adapt quickly, redefine our strategies and, finally, we were able to achieve the residency approval. Overall, it was a great experience working with this firm. I sincerely thank him and his team for their hard work and would definitely hire him again.

TERRIBLE LAWYER

My name is Diana. In March of last year I requested Tapia-Ruano & Gunn’s services to help me with my husband’s immigration process. When we had the interview I explained my situation in detail and they said they could help. Since most people (from what I heard from these lawyers) live in the US while... going through this process, my situation was a little different not having lived nor worked here in the last 7 years. Any questions I had would go to the lawyer (Tristan Gunn) through his receptionists and we would mostly use e-mail to communicate because even getting the receptionist on the phone was hard. I had the first consultation mid-March, but the contract did not start officially until they received it mid-April. By this time, they already had some of my information including birth and marriage certificates and I mention this because it took them about 20 days to let me know we needed to make a change in the marriage certificate. It wasn’t until they asked for the Bona Fide marriage documents that we started having problems. First of all, I had explained the situation in detail (before even signing a contract). We had just received our professional degree and we were unemployed even in Mexico. I tried asking many times for other examples of documents that could work for us. I got tired of how slow everything was happening and I tried talking to the paralegal in charge of my case. So I started calling and insisting on talking to the paralegal and the receptionist (Esmeralda) would not put me through to her. She kept saying she was too busy to talk to me and I asked if I could schedule an appointment and she said no. Since I did not have a US phone number, I would always call them. I was also willing to pay for an appointment to see the paralegal, but the receptionist didn’t even give me that option!!! I was very upset because the process was taking way too long and they were not being very helpful so I decided to take the trip to the US and go talk to them in person. I arrived to their office in downtown Chicago and they had me talk to a person (Elena Gunn) that had no idea what was going on and knew nothing about my case. She was very rude to say the least. Then after she finished yelling, they put me in a room with my lawyer (finally). First of all he knew nothing about my case. It made me realize they hadn’t been doing much those few months. He began explaining everything as if he were talking to a 10 year old. All I wanted was for him to give me more ideas of what documents I could use as proof of Bona Fide marriage (which was the main reason why I hired them!!). There were so many things they overlooked because they did not review the case at all. When you first have the interview, they even tell you both lawyers in the firm will review the case together. It is very upsetting to know that neither of them was doing that. Before leaving he pointed out some issues in my documents (only because I brought it up) and told me I had to correct them. It took them weeks to notice this by the way. It was going to take me a couple months because I had to go to court for a name change. So, I informed my lawyer it was going to take that long and they responded saying they were going to start charging me an hourly fee since I was taking too long to come up with the documents. They said they had moved the deadline for me twice already. I immediately told them I could not afford to pay an hourly rate. They would take days and even weeks to reply and on top of everything they blamed me for taking too long. That list they gave me of the Bona Fide marriage documents you can find online for free. I hired them because I needed their “experience”. I closed my case and asked for a refund. They said most of the “work” was done already so they gave me almost nothing back. They did not even give me my passport pictures. I am sure he was also upset to have seen me without me paying to meet with him. Probably another reason why they kept all my $

Replied last January 24, 2019

I did represent this client, but ended my representation almost 5 months before the date of this review. Representation ended because this client would not follow instructions. Unfortunately, I cannot give details here in this public forum of examples as to the thorough level of service and instruction she was actually provided with while she was represented, due to the rules pertaining to confidentiality of current and even past clients. I can only say a great deal of time was invested in instructing her, repeatedly, on what was needed to prepare the paperwork related to her case. When I ultimately arrived at a point where it became clear she would not follow my advice or instruction moving forward with her case I informed her that I was terminating my representation and she was refunded a portion of her payments to my office that was fair considering time and work performed up to that point. Every case is a partnership between the attorney and client. The information comes from the client. If a client is unwilling or refusing to cooperate or provide needed documentation and information than the case quickly stalls or falls apart and representation cannot continue. This is a case of a client being frustrated with the process, a process that made her case more difficult because of her specific situation, and sadly that frustration was directed at my office.

Excellent lawyer

Tristan went with me to my asylum interview, he made sure to prepare me for it starting two weeks before, after having his office working on my case for few months before i applied ,making sure i have all the required papers and helping collecting evidences, he comforts me the day of my interview by ...reminding me ''it is not a test there is no messing up we are telling our story'' which gives me huge confidence in telling my story . I would recommend him for anyone needs an attorney for an asylum case.
