About Stephen
Biography
Stephen M. Komie is the founder of Komie and Associates and brings more than four decades of litigation experience to his clients. He has represented individuals and businesses in state, federal, and international courts, handling both trial and appellate matters. His work has garnered attention across Illinois for involvement in high-profile cases, including the defense of Sandra Fabiano in a widely reported child abuse case and the representation of Roland Breault and John Carroccia in first degree murder trials.
Throughout his career, Mr. Komie has earned a reputation for providing vigorous and strategic defense in criminal proceedings. His efforts have led to important decisions, such as the 1995 asset forfeiture case of U.S. v. $506,. He has argued five cases before the Illinois Supreme Court, including a 2017 decision in People v. Ringland, where he successfully challenged the authority of a state prosecutor who had established an unauthorized investigative unit.
Mr. Komie has received numerous honors in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession. In 2015, he served as an ambassador at the Rededication of the Magna Carta in Runnymede, England, marking the document’s 800th anniversary. Earlier, in 2006, he participated as a delegate to The Hague Convention on International Child Abduction in the Netherlands. He has been named among the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by both The National Trial Lawyers and the American Trial Lawyers Association, and has held a seat on the Executive Committee of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers.
In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Komie has played a prominent role in bar association leadership. He has served on the Illinois State Bar Association's Assembly since 1985 and spent 25 years on its Board of Governors. He is the author of the Attorney’s Bill of Rights, which was adopted by the Illinois Supreme Court. His commitment to individual liberties continues through his active participation in the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

DEA swiped my cash.
