In all likelihood you will be wasting your time once the insurance companies have determined liability.

The normal statute of limitations is 2 years. In rare circumstances it can be extended to 4 years.

The bank usually if not always insures there is a policy covering the property. If you cancel your policy the bank will likely be notified.
