Emily L. Tramont

My name is Emily Tramont and I am an associate attorney at The Kaplan Law Firm, LLC. I represent debtors who have filed for Bankruptycy under Chapter 13 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.  From the time a case is filed to the time that it is closed, I work with clients to create a financial plan in which they make monthly payments, based on their income, towards the satisfaction of their debt.  In return, the client is able to keep most, or all, of their property.  Throughout the life of the case,  I regularly appear in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois-Eastern Division to present and oppose motions, participate in adversary proceedings, and appear at hearings to resolve objections.   

In addition, my work at Kaplan consists of providing non-bankruptcy student loan services.  Because student loans are generally non-dischargeable, the options for curing default or committing to a repayment agreement is done outside of the bankruptcy context.  In this context, my work consists of client counseling regarding the nature of their student loans (determining whether the loan is federal or private), negotiations with the collection agency assigned to the loan, rehabilitation of defaulted loans, and enrollment into the appropriate repayment program.

I am originally from Miami, Florida, and have lived in Boston, Wyoming, and Chicago.  I received my bachelor's degree in Art History from Wellesley College.
