An Excellent Attorney

I hired Mary McSwain through a referral. She assisted me in a two-year grueling process of divorce for which I am very grateful today. She is a professional who really understands the law and and the court system. As a lay person, the legal process was/is very nebulous to me. During the 2 years t...here were moments of doubt and discouragement. I realized during this process that Mary had the whole thing masterfully tethered. She anticipated and executed every legal requirement in a timely manner. She made clear everything that was entitled to me under the law and made those her goals. I realized those moments of doubt were because I was not fully trusting and listening to Mary. She can be trusted 100%. She holds herself to a high standard of integrity which is clearly visible. I have referred her to others and will continue to refer her to anyone who says, "Do you know a good attorney?" My response is, "I will give you the name of an excellent one!"

Deceiving and Apathetic

I rarely leave bad reviews for anything, but Mary was very disappointing. In my personal opinion, she gained my trust and then majorly failed me. My case was domestic, I was pregnant and she had me leave my home the night before she went on vacation to Europe. The next morning there was an emergency ...hearing. The lawyer she used to represent me when she was gone had me meet her 10 minutes before trial to go over my case. I was not prepared at all, the lawyer did not litigate and I lost temporary custody of my son due to the lies of my ex husband. My bill was ran up very high that day. I had to go on leave from work for bed rest and then had my child who needed to stay in the nicu. That, along with an unpaid maternity leave, left me scraping to get by. I did not have the money to pay Mary. She then had a male lawyer call me repeatedly in an attempt to collect $6000, while taking care of a sick newborn, so she then sued me for the money in small claims court. I did not show up to court so she had the judge put a lien on my house. I had sent Mary emails, she knew what was going on, she knew I had no money, I begged her to reconsider court. Mary was very cold, and apathetic after my trial. She showed no remorse for leaving me with poor representation and during such an emotional time that was very upsetting. I developed ulcers from all the stress of being sued and taking care of two children under 3. It was not a joyous time, because of the stress she caused that whole year with my children was a blur and Ive lost that time of their youth forever....I can NEVER get that back. So the price of using Mary cost me much more than any monetary value. This was over two years ago. I just want to make sure this doesn't happen again to another helpless person. Be very careful who you choose.

Best Experience Ever!!!!!

Mary McSwain was referred to me by my brother. He had her handle a few transactions for him in the past and recommended her to me. From the first phone call, Mary and her assistant Lynn were nothing but professional. Mary explained every detail of the sale of my house to me and that was helpful ...since I knew nothing about selling a house. She was timely with her verbal and written responses. I dealt a lot with Lynn who is her assistant and she is just as incredible. The people that I had around me for the sale and purchase of new property were awful. The only bright spots in the storm were Mary and Lynn!!! Mary was prompt and on time for every meeting and phone call. I just can not say enough about how much Mary and Lynn helped me through this process. Best people ever!!!!!

Great Demeanor, Focused Lawyer

Mary has a great demeanor about her, she is direct, and helps you understand the key points of your case as opposed to worrying about the nonsense that comes with divorce cases. Her honesty and her insight enabled me to stay focused on the key items and not get lost in the rhetoric. When opposing ...counsel tried to take our case off track, she acted decisively and swiftly to ensure that we only discussed the items before the Court. This saved time, money and allowed us to settle the items before the Court in a clear and decisive manner. I recommend Mary to any potential client who needs a lawyer that is focused, puts their clients issues first, and gives you straight factual talk (as opposed to feeding emotional rhetoric). She is a first class act.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
