Chris Bemben is by far the best attorney I've ever had the pleasure of working with. After a terrifying arrest and holding by Chicago Police Department on a DUI charge, I knew I needed a lawyer. I also knew I needed a former prosecutor who could navigate the ins and outs of the system with ease. I ce...rtainly didn't want someone fresh out of law school who was learning on my dime. I found Chris online and went in to interview him for the job. I had 6 other attorneys on my list to interview over that next couple of days. However, when I met Chris, he listened to my entire recollection of the events, looked at the tickets issued, and asked me a couple pointed questions. Then he assured me everything would be okay, and that he handles a ton of DUI cases from Chicago PD. Turns out he also had experience going against my arresting officer on the stand. He knew exactly who the officer was and what his "M.O" was. He said he couldn't tell me what to do, but his rates are based on winning at trial. He doesn't recommend clients take a plea or settle. He's a fighter. But he made it clear he would represent me in any way I requested. I didn't feel pressured or anything. After about an hour together that day, I looked down at my notes as he left the office briefly to make copies of my tickets. He was going to do some research for me and point me in the right direction whether or not I chose to retain him. Anyway I was reviewing my notes and realized I had no need to interview any other attorneys. Chris projected a confidence that made ME feel confident. When he came back into the room I was already writing the retainer check. Skipping to the part I'm sure you're wondering, one of Chris' staff attorneys won back my license at a judicial review (one of my initial court appearances). I was nervous at first when Chris couldn't appear with me that day due to a trial conflict, because I had gotten to know Chris, not any of his staff aside from Diane, his office manager. That staff attorney guy was aggressive, professional, knowledgeable, and VERY quick on his feet considering he only read through my case file on the way into court. He was a BEAST without being disrespectful in any way. As for the criminal case itself, we did go to trial. Chris and I showed up to every single court appearance downtown and demanded a bench trial at every appearance. The prosecutors were never ready. I mean it was really like an adult working with a child (Chris being the adult, the prosecutors being the children). Needless to say, 6 months into the case, and there was a significant case against me but it all hinged on testimony from the arresting officer and his supervisor, the prosecution admitted to the judge they didn't have enough evidence to win a conviction. All charges were dropped and all tickets were dismissed as well. I didn't even need to pay so much as a speeding ticket! The prosecution knew we weren't playing around. I saw so many other DUI cases go before the court where people appeared without representation and many cases where the defendant was represented by a public defender. First of all, don't represent yourself. That's stupid. As for public defenders, legal representation isn't the cheapest thing but it's worth it in the end. One note: public defenders, by law, cannot represent you before judicial review or a Secretary of State hearing to rescind your summary suspension (aka get your license back). So make sure you hire Chris Bemben and his team to represent you. While he never guaranteed a win, the way he positioned my defense made a win the only logical conclusion. You're going to get a lot of postcards and Xerox copied flyers in the mail after your DUI arrest. Rip them up. Chris doesn't market his firm that way because he doesn't have to. Satisfied clients like me spread the word and his skills close the deal. Please take my advice seriously. And good luck.
