Chausow Shafer PC: dedicated to serving clients’ needs with compassion and respect
Nancy Chausow Shafer of Chausow Shafer, PC grew up in Highland Park and attended Highland Park High School so it was a no brainer to establish her practice in the hometown that she has always loved. Nancy is currently in her 35th year as a lawyer—she concentrates in Matrimonial Law: Litigation, Mediation and Collaboration.
“We partner with the client and work together to develop an individual strategy for every case, after a frank discussion of process options, substance and cost,” said firm owner, Nancy Chausow Shafer. “Our clients are assured the highest standard of advocacy, addressing both the immediate legal issues at hand, as well as the impact upon the client's future.”
Nancy, and and the other attorneys in her firm, understand fully how the decisions made during the divorce process affect each and every member of a family. Whether through settlement, litigation, mediation or collaborative process, the family-law attorneys at Chausow Shafer PC take into consideration many alternatives to move cases forward with the best possible outcome.
“We do whatever best helps us meet our clients’ goals, making sure each client understands the range of possible options and the likely outcomes through court and settlement,” said Nancy. “In many cases, we can find more satisfying ways of resolving issues for clients and their pocketbooks.”
Advice and tips for those facing divorce
Chausow Shafer understands that those going through divorce undergo emotional strain that can impair their better judgment. Her firm can help you sort through your priorities – such as your children’s well being and your financial security – and reach a satisfactory, realistic goal. The first critical choice you should make after the decision to get a divorce is “how” you will get divorced. The options for the process you choose can really impact not only the costs, but also the outcomes. Whether mediation, collaborative or more traditional settlement processes, Chausow Shafer has the experience and training to assist.
“Try to know where you’re going; don’t get lost in the forest,” Nancy advises. “Don’t get sidetracked on issues that don’t move you toward your goals. In difficult divorces, time and money are often spent on issues that just aren’t important.”
Preparation is an essential part of the firm’s work, particularly when a case is going to court.
“Most judges have heavy caseloads and not enough time to hear matters as fully as we’d like. So we make sure we’re prepared to give an efficient presentation that doesn’t tax the court’s resources,” said Nancy.
“It makes us proud to have clients come through with satisfactory outcomes – especially when the obstacles seemed insurmountable in the beginning,” said Nancy. “When past clients call back or refer friends and family to us, we know that we have a lot of respect in the profession. We often get referrals from clients’ ex-spouses or opposing attorneys.”
