About Michael

Learn Michael’s areas of practice.

I am a real estate attorney at Hellmuth & Johnson. I help people when they need a real estate specialist to guide them through the complex issues that are involved when they purchase, sell, lease, finance or improve real estate.  My clients include real estate developers, residential and commercial builders, business owners, community banks and associations.

Real estate owners and developers benefit from my experience on the other side of the table in land use regulation matters. Prior to joining Hellmuth & Johnson, I represented several Minnesota cities and worked closely with city planners and engineers regarding zoning, subdivision and development. I also served as chairman of several municipal boards and commissions, including a planning commission, board of adjustment and appeals, and environmental advisory committee.

I have represented clients in hundreds of real estate transactions, including residential and commercial purchases and sales, leases, easements and financing. I achieved board certification as a Real Property Law Specialist from the Minnesota State Bar Association in 2006, and I was recognized on the Minnesota Rising Stars list by Magazine and Twin Cities Business every year from 2008 through 2013.

My work in the area of common interest communities includes advising developers regarding creation of condominiums, mixed-use developments and master-planned communities; drafting and amending governing documents; and general representation of homeowners associations. I am a past president of the Minnesota Chapter of Community Associations Institute, and I serve on legislative committees that influence community association law at the state capitol.

thorough, efficient, communicative.
We hired Michael Klemm to guide us through a more difficult commercial transaction. We were under a 1031 time crunch and MIchael did a fantastic job getting this completed in time. He was thorough, always followed through and knew when to negotiate. He found years old document errors needing correcting before closing. We highly recommend using Michael.

Fantastic Lawyer!
We recently purchased a building on a 1031 exchange. We were new at this and needed guidance in this complicated process. We were incredibly grateful that we had Michael for our lawyer. He was smart and extremely thorough, and didn’t miss any detail - big or small. He was also very kind and easy to work with. He listened and helped with all of our questions and worries. He was very organized and helped us every step of the way. I would never hesitate to recommend him and would definitely use his services again. He is, simply put, a fantastic lawyer in every way.

Professional, kind and easy to talk to
Michael was great! He knows his work well, very professional and kind. He does not make assumptions and he is very easy to talk with about your concerns. Michael is very helpful in presenting the information back to you that he has discovered and knows potentially will cause problems for you. He understands the value of time and does not try to spend excessive time on things but rather just the time it takes and is reasonably priced as a result. I would hire him again in a minute! So great to work with.
