Our family has lost trust in "the system" and has been hurt deeply and irreparably by systematic injustice...but the Cambridge City Police and Beth Hiljus...our son's attorney..have reminded us that there are still integrity filled people in that same system...who care about their citizens and client...s..and are willing to go above and beyond for the sake of that client. Our son is Deaf and the courts provided an Interpreter who was so thorough in her interpreting..that the process for Beth of explaining to our son what was happening...the process, etc, took 3 times as long as it normally would..due to the lengthy interpreting AND Beth's insistence that he understand EVERYTHING. Beth never gave even a glimpse of impatience. She was so respectful..so warm and professional at the same time...and her intuition about our son's character was dead on. She always appeared absolutely comfortable communicating with our son in this unconventional means...making him feel safe. She always spoke directly to our son...had beautiful eye contact..and made him feel valued and secure that his needs were all she was focused on...which is many times not the case when people communicate with the Deaf... in spite of her truly CRAZY schedule...she never seemed too rushed to listen and care...AND she was so patient with this mom (me) who talks too much and can be really ignorant and inappropriate. .her gracious attitude even extended to my annoying cluelessness. Our court experience concluded with really wise and beneficial decisions agreed on by both Beth and the kind Prosecutor that will help our son continue toward a successful future. We are so grateful that she is who ended up with our son's case.
