In September, 2005, Angel LeDesma was injured when the driver of a car, involved in a race with another vehicle, ran a red light and smashed into her vehicle. She was injured and suffered pain in her l ... ower back and right leg. Although she sought medical treatment, the pain did not go away. The insurance company for the at-fault driver, American Family Insurance, said that the pain she suffered was merely a continuation of the discomfort she had during her earlier pregnancies. They offered her $1,000. Attorney Brandon Derry filed a lawsuit on Ms. LeDesma's behalf and proceeded to trial. He convinced a Rock County jury that American Family Insurance was wrong. As a result, Ms. LeDesma was awarded more than $50,000—50 times more than she was originally offered.
