I was raised on a Northeast Iowa farm. I graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. degree in Dairy Science and a B.S. degree in Public Service and Administration in Agriculture in 1979. I graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1982. I clerked for the busiest Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Judge in the United States, the Honorable William W. Thinnes, from June of 1984 until his death in September of 1985. Thereafter, I resumed my practice and emphasizing farm bankruptcy and debt restructuring. I frequently teach lawyers about bankruptcy.
My favorite hobby is woodworking. I enjoy making furniture that I design.

This lawyer was disciplined by a state licensing authority in 2004.
Reprimand issued in IL, 2004
updated on 07/20/2017Reprimand means an attorney did something wrong but may still practice law. The State gives the lawyer a public reprimand in hopes that he or she will not repeat the behavior.
“This reprimand is due to self reporting of the Iowa public reprimand regarding the County Recorder's mistaken release of the lien on the boat.”
Reprimand issued in IA, 2003
updated on 07/20/2017This means the attorney did something wrong, but the Bar did not suspend the lawyer. Typically in this case the lawyer's poor behavior is exposed to the public in hopes that he or she will not repeat the behavior.
“I accepted a public reprimand as the prosecution of the complaint occurred when my wife had been diagnosed with cancer. The County Recorder had mistakenly released the lien on my client's boat so it did not show up when a lien search was completed on the boat. I advised my client to sell the boat and exempt the proceeds.”
