OUTCOME: All Issues of Custody, Visitation, Support and Equitable Distribution Resolved Through Mediation Prior to Trial.

Ms. Afsous represented Ms. G through various court hearings including a contentious pendente lite motion and several hearings concerning discovery issues from the opposing side. After a two-day mediati ... on session, Ms. Afsous was able to negotiate a settlement agreement that provided Ms. G with a spousal support figure that would have been unlikely achieved through the court process. All issues pertaining to custody, visitation, child support, and distribution of the parties' assets and debts were also resolved favorably for Ms. G through the mediation process, which saved Ms. G the additional fees necessary to pursue further litigation.

OUTCOME: Opposing Party's Motion to Modify Custody Denied; Client Granted Final Say in Matters Pertaining to Child's Educational Decisions

Ms. Afsous represented Ms. L during a lengthy custody modification trial, where opposing party was coaching the minor child regarding where to live and what school to attend in the Fall. At the hearing ... , Ms. Afsous was able to show the court that the minor child had been coached by opposing party regarding what to say, that opposing party acted in violation of the parties' custody order, and that opposing party was trying to create distance between Ms. L and the minor child. The court denied opposing party's motion to modify custody, but granted Ms. L's motion, thereby providing Ms. L with ultimate say regarding the child's education moving forward.

OUTCOME: Opposing Party's Motions to Modify Custody and Visitation Denied; Client's Motion Granted With Attorney's Fees

In a two-day custody and visitation trial, Ms. Afsous represented Mr. Q, who was being denied overnight and holiday visitation with his children by opposing party. Opposing party filed several motions ... and tried to further reduce the amount of time that Mr. Q was able to spend with his children. At the hearing, Ms. Afsous was able to show the court that opposing party did not have any justified reasons for limiting Mr. Q's contact with the kids and was simply attempting to alienate the children from their father. Ultimately, the Court denied her motions and granted Mr. Q's motion seeking weekend overnight visitation with his children and holiday visitation time. Finally, the court granted Mr. Q's request for reasonable attorney's fees based on opposing party's behavior and lack of co-parenting.

OUTCOME: Opposing Party Held in Contempt for Violation of Court Order

Ms. Afsous represented Mr. K during negotiations after he filed a Rule to Show Cause against his ex-wife in Fairfax County Circuit Court for her failure to abide by the terms of the parties' marital se ... ttlement contract. On the morning of the Rule to Show Cause, Mr. K's ex-wife and her attorney agreed to an Order holding Mr. K's ex-wife in contempt of court and responsible to pay a portion of Mr. K's attorney's fees and costs incurred in bringing the Rule to Show Cause. Due to this agreement reached a few minutes prior to the hearing, Mr. K saved additional attorney's fees and the Court endorsed the Order of Contempt against Mr. K's ex-wife.

OUTCOME: Custody, Visitation, and Child Support Determination in Favor of Mother

Ms. Afsous represented Ms. K in a custody, visitation, and child support matter filed in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of Fairfax County. Ms. K had filed petitions to determine the ... custody, visitation, and child support of her minor children against her husband. Following the initial status hearing, counsel for Ms. K's husband approached Ms. Afsous for out of court settlement. During the next month, until the second status hearing, Ms. Afsous advocated aggressively during the negotiation process. The parties ultimately reached an agreement, providing that Ms. K had sole legal custody and primary physical custody of the minor children. The Court endorsed the parties' agreement, awarding custody of the children to Ms. K.
