At Hubbs Law Group, we help families in our community create a thoughtful estate plan that ensures their hard-earned assets are passed on to the people they care about while avoiding the hassle of the probate process.
I chose to practice estate planning because of a terrible thing that happened to my family after my grandmother passed away in 2004. My mother along with her siblings, found themselves fighting over sentimental items that held significant emotional value. These disputes caused lasting rifts—some of my aunts and uncles still don’t speak to one another over twenty years later. I witnessed firsthand the pain this caused my mother, and it made me want to help other families avoid similar conflicts during a time of grief.
Another incident that influenced my career path happened early on in my career. I was involved as an attorney in a tragic case where both parents and one child in a family were killed in a car accident, leaving their surviving child without clear direction on who should care for him. Without a plan, the decision went to a judge unfamiliar with their family, which resulted in bitter disputes among relatives over guardianship. This experience made it clear that every parent needed to have a plan in place to protect the future of their children.
I graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's in science. I went to Purdue because I have always loved science and wanted to work for NASA (at the time, Purdue had graduated more astronauts than any other university or military academy). Despite my best efforts, I found that it is very hard to get a job with NASA, that I wanted to stay close to my family and friends in Michigan, and that it was time to redirect my goals. After I graduated from Purdue, I returned to Michigan where I took a job in the automotive industry developing paint for cars. While I was at that job, many environmental issues came up relating to the paint development. I thought that with my science background and experience in the automotive industry becoming an environmental law attorney would be a good fit for me. I decided to attend Michigan State University College of Law. Once there, I discovered that I didn’t like environmental law after all and I wanted to go into an area of law where I could help people directly. I didn’t know what that area was when I graduated. But, life has a funny way of pointing you in the right direction. The family splitting experience with my grandma and the sad car accident case involving the family of four set me on my path to starting my estate planning practice.
Little did I know that when I went to Michigan State University College of Law I would meet my future husband and law partner. I am married to my best friend and law partner, Andrew Hubbs. We met in law school and decided to open our own law practice. We wanted to start a firm, keep it small, and make it a place where our clients would feel like they were a part of our family rather than just another client at a big firm. We are dedicated to creating a welcoming environment where our clients feel like family.
As a proud mother of three, I cherish my time with my family. Our oldest son, Alex, is studying at Michigan State University with aspirations of becoming an attorney. Our middle child, Jacob, is at the University of Michigan (yes, we are a house-divided!), while our daughter, Allison, is busy with high school. Our three playful golden retrievers, Zeke, Max, and Leo complete our family. In our spare time, we love visiting our sons at college and cheering on our daughter in her volleyball games.
