I had a question about the legality of a stock market transaction, and Nicholas was willing to get into a fair amount of detail without charging. When I asked him to look further into it he proposed a fixed fee based on a reasonable estimate of how long it would take to research my question, even if ...in reality it took longer. He took the time to explain his findings in a way that was easy for me to understand, despite the fact that I'm not particularly experienced in the stock market or legal matters. It was clear that he was putting himself in my shoes and thinking of everything I would need to know, offering helpful information that was relevant but outside the scope of my exact question.
