Brian R. Balow is a Member of Dawda, Mann, Mulcahy & Sadler, PLC. He concentrates his practice in the areas of domestic and international transactional law, IP protection and licensing, information technology/cyberlaw, corporate governance, and mergers and acquisitions. He has represented clients in numerous industries, including factory automation, automotive, apparel, heavy machinery, healthcare, publishing, agriculture, telecommunications, and tax-exempt nonprofits. For more than 15 years Mr. Balow has represented a Fortune 50 manufacturing company on a wide range of technology transactions, including licenses, joint development agreements, strategic alliances, joint ventures, and outsourcing deals.
Mr. Balow has served as both inside and outside general counsel to clients, routinely advising on risk management and governance matters. He has assisted U.S. clients in the formation of subsidiary entities and strategic alliances in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Argentina, and China, and played a lead role in the development of an IP asset management system for a Malaysian multinational energy company. Mr. Balow has also helped to develop, manage, and implement international trademark licensing programs for two clients with well-known brand identities.
Mr. Balow regularly counsels clients across the United States on heath, IT and telemedicine-related matters, and has spoken and written extensively on these issues. He is a member of the HIMSS Connected Health Committee and the mHIMSS Roadmap Task force. In addition to other writings, he contributed the chapter entitled “Allocation and Mitigation of Liability” to the ABA Health Law Section’s “E-Health, Privacy, and Security Law” treatise. He is also currently the Board President of Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center, a substance use disorder program.
Mr. Balow earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Georgia in 1988 where he served as the Managing Editor of the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law, and his B.A. in Urban Studies from Western Michigan University in 1980. Mr. Balow also did graduate work in Economics at Wayne State University.
