OUTCOME: hung jury and aborted trial

Brian Nichols was charged with raping his girlfriend after she decided to end their relationship. Mr. Hazen did not believe that the allegations were consistent with the physical evidence. He tried th ... e case before a jury. The jury voted 8 to 4 for acquittal. The case was retried one week later. Mr. Nichols snapped during the second trial and shot the judge, a court reporter and a deputy. Mr. Hazen subsequently learned from multiple independent sources that the trial judge intended to grant a directed verdict of acquittal at the close of the State's case. Unfortunately, we never reached that point.

Andrew Martin was 16 years old and walking home from his part time job at a church when he was accosted by three teenagers who attempted to rob him. Angry that Andrew had nothing to take, one of the b ... oys shot and killed him. Upon arrest one of the boys claimed not to have been there, but to have been with Bayo Brown. The police, ever eager to make arrests and close the case, arrested Bayo. He was charged with murder. At a joint trial the perpetrators were convicted and Bayo was acquitted. Bayo is now the father of four boys. He and Mr. Hazen remain close 30 years later.
