Mr. Hazen grew up in the metropolitan New York area. He earned a Bachelors degree in speech communication from Long Island University in 1967. After graduation he attended the State University of New York at Buffalo and earned both Masters and Doctoral degrees in the study of the acoustical properties of human speech. His primary focus was in the area of speaker identification, then known as “Voiceprint Identification.” Mr. Hazen’s doctoral research cast doubt on the accuracy of voiceprints as evidence in courts of law. His research was published nationally and internationally. Consequently, he was contacted by attorneys who had cases where Voiceprints were to be introduced as evidence. This kindled his desire to study law. Mr. Hazen then enrolled at the University of North Carolina School of Law where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 1977.
After graduating from law school Mr. Hazen relocated to Atlanta where he began practicing law under the supervision of Al Horn, one of the Southeast’s preeminent criminal defense lawyers. In 1983 Mr. Hazen opened his own practice, limited to representing those accused of committing crimes.
During the past 35 years Mr. Hazen has handled motions, jury trials, appeals, and post conviction matters in court all over the State. These courts include multiple State and Superior Courts, the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Georgia Supreme Court, the United States District Courts, and the United States Court of Appeals. He has represented people from all walks of life and become proficient in Spanish along the way. Mr. Hazen has built a reputation as a lawyer who is effective, thorough, and dedicated, yet approachable and very down to earth. Every client is important to him, and consequently he handles every case personally. No one works harder than he does.
