Very questionable ethics and gender bias.
Kayleen Teufel was my divorce lawyer. She let me know right from the start that she works for me and does what I ask her to do. Nothing could be further from the truth. She was poorly prepared for the very first Provisional hearing. Her and my ex-wife's lawyer, David Baum, had prepared the first prov...isional draft in which I was given a day before the court date. I was told to review and make sure that it didn't have errors and reflected what I agreed to. Lawyer Teufel told me to come in 20 minutes early before court with any amendments or questions I had.
Well, I had only one amendment for the provisional and that was to be provided a list of items that my ex-wife had removed from the residence. I also had a letter that was drafted to the ex-wife asking her to describe what she witnessed of my in-patient stroke during an echocardiogram at Porter Memorial (Health) Hospital. Teufel responded sharply back at me that the possessions taken from the house could be handled at another time. She also responded that my ex-wife had made it quite clear that my wife was not helping me with my legal case against the hospital. Mind you, I had never had any conversation with Teufel about my ex-wife's involvement in my legal case against the hospital and several doctors.
Teufel told me that we couldn't keep the Judge waiting, and we headed for the Court House. Before going into the courtroom, David Baum had an amendment to the Provisional that was asking for possessions from the residence. I refused the amendment, which immediately upset Teufel. Teufel now felt that this couldn't be done at a later time and getting into the court room and not having the Judge wait was of no consequence. This was only a position she took against me when I wanted an amendment entered that was far more consequential in monetary value than what was being proposed by my ex-wife's attorney.
In prepping me for the Provisional hearing, Teufel had told me that David Baum was going to ask me questions about the domestic abuse and that I was to take the fifth. I responded that I wasn't going to take the fifth to something that I didn't do. And why would she even allow such questioning in a divorce provisional hearing? To this day, and as stated in court proceedings, I am still very adamant about being 100% innocent of any domestic violence. Baum didn't ask any questions.
The Judge had told me in the domestic abuse case that I was to have no contact with my ex-wife, and all communication was to be done through my attorney. Teufel emotionally flat-out refused to communicate my correspondence to my ex. I did get my "next" divorce lawyer to draft a letter to my ex concerning what she witnessed at the hospital. This remains very valuable evidence in a continuing legal matter.
Why my "next" divorce lawyer, because after the very first court proceeding, Teufel would stomp down the hall in the court room with her arms flailing and loudly correspond to David Baum how he had the much better client. David Baum was looking directly at me, giving Teufel the clue that I was directly behind her. She turned around and said to me that they were talking about clients that they had in common. A flat-out nonsensical lie. Days later she would sign-off as my lawyer, siting communication problems.
I ended up going Pro Se in finalizing my divorce proceedings and got to meet David Baum. In what I thought was very corrupt, Baum did relay to me that he was only doing what his client told him to do. Which was his job. Through Teufel's admiration of lawyer David Baum, he was able to manipulate her against her own client. She did nothing that I requested, except charge me $4,500 for representation that was detrimental to the outcome. I would highly recommend David Baum, whose hard-working ethics gets the job done. I got the wrong lawyer.
