The Bankruptcy Legal Services is a woman owned and operated law firm with one attorney, Portia Douglas. In 1985, she graduated from Notre Dame Law School with the goal of helping people. Since 1987, she has been practicing exclusively consumer and small business bankruptcy law, taking a personal interest in helping clients receive a financial fresh start. Portia gives personal & non-judgmental bankruptcy service to each client. At your first consultation , the bankruptcy process will be explained in detail. Portia takes the time to determine the needs of each individual case; in 2017, she successfully won a rare bankruptcy judgment, discharging a client's federal student loans. Portia realizes that each case is as unique as each client.

Thank you for the GREAT advise. She really cared about our situation.
Portia was extremely knowledgeable, honest and helpful. She gave us great advise and direction. She took her time to understand our situation and provide sound advise on what direction we should go which was not to file bankruptcy at this time. She really is a different type of attorney. Beware....
My husband and I chose Ms. Douglas based in her online reviews as we had little else to help us choose an attorney. Perhaps we are alone in our experience, but things did NOT go smoothly from the start. The bankruptcy process and options are very confusing. We sought out an attorney to help clari...
I have successfully filed hundreds of Chapter 7 bankruptcies for above-the-median debtors. Many of those debtors had consulted with a prior attorney who automatically advised them to file Chapter 13 bankruptcy without running a means test because the attorney can charge a higher fee. I do not work that way. If Chapter 7 bankruptcy accomplishes my clients' goals, I take the time and make a concerted effort to qualify them for Chapter 7 (for a means test fee of two-fifths of my full bankruptcy fee). The process of determining options in Chapter 7 takes a lot of lawyer time and expertise. That is why many lawyers automatically put above-the- median income debtors in Chapter 13 and don't attempt to qualify them for Chapter 7.
