Dear Cynthia, Thank you for your review. I appreciate all reviews, positive or negative, because they give me insight into what I am doing wrong and what I am doing right. Before my highly experienced legal assistant sets up an initial paid consultation, he makes every attempt to make certain that the circumstances and goals of the potential client match up with my experience and skill set. And he is extremely effective at this. But once in a while, as in this case, the circumstances and goals initially appear to match up well and the appointment is made, but as the consultation progresses, it becomes clear that what is being sought is really outside of my areas of expertise and experience. When that happens, rather than try to push forward no matter what, with the attendant risk of giving the potential client bad advice, I will do just what I did in this case: cut short the consultation and, where the initial consultation fee has already been paid, immediately refund the full amount of the consultation fee. I’m also sorry that I came off as abrasive. I try to treat everyone I deal with the way I would like to be treated, which is with courtesy and respect. However, I do tend to be pretty straightforward, even blunt, when I either have bad news or when I determine that I am not the right person for the job. To be anything less than fully honest and straightforward about things like that would do the potential client a great disfavor. Again, I appreciate the review, as it will help me to be a better lawyer and will help my legal assistant to be better at his job.
