Brian Katz was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1966. He attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he majored in accounting. He graduated from IU in 1988 with a B.S. with highest distinction. While at IU, Mr. Katz received the highest award conferred by the IU School of Business. Before graduating, Mr. Katz sat for and passed the 1988 Uniform Certified Public Accounting examination in Indianapolis. Mr. Katz then went on to attend the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville, Virginia. There, he was Executive Editor of the Virginia Tax Review. He was awarded his J.D. from UVA in 1991.
Following graduation from UVA, Mr. Katz returned to Memphis where he clerked for the Hon. Julia S. Gibbons on the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. At the time she was appointed, Judge Gibbons was the youngest woman ever appointed to the federal bench, and she now sits on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. At the conclusion of that clerkship, Mr. Katz joined a large law firm in Memphis before joining Ballin, Ballin & Fishman, P.C., a noted, high-profile criminal defense firm. There, Mr. Katz worked closely with Marvin Ballin, Esq., and Leslie Ballin, Esq., two of the most respected criminal law attorneys in the State of Tennessee. There, Mr. Katz gained invaluable trial experience, cross-examining literally hundreds of police officers and trying three capital murder cases to verdict. In that position, Mr. Katz also got his first experience representing individuals who were injured by the negligence of others and gained even more valuable jury trial experience.
Mr. Katz moved to Paducah, Kentucky, in 1996, and formed his own firm in 1998. Since then, Mr. Katz has focused primarily on family law, divorce, domestic relations, and personal injury, representing exclusively the injured party. Within his personal injury practice, Mr. Katz has developed an extensive Jones Act and general maritime practice representing injured Jones Act seamen who work on the inland rivers of the United States. Paducah, Kentucky, is the hub of the inalnd river system in the United States, and Mr. Katz is proud to represent the hard working men and women who work on the river. Mr. Katz formed a partnership with L. Jeff Bloomfield, Esq., of Memphis, Tennessee, who has over thirty (30) years representing injured river workers. Together, Mr. Katz and Mr. Bloomfield represent numerous seamen injured on the Mississippi River, the Ohio River, the Cumberland River, and the Tennessee River.
Mr. Katz is rated an AV+ Preeminent Lawyer by Martindale Hubble, the highest possible rating.
